THE SOLDIER'S SONG

By George Edward Tait

Into the sunrise, the soldier sings
A song of syncopated silence -
Marching into multiple miles of morning mist,
The choral cadence of combat boots
Deployed against the decibels of the day.
Soon the soundlessness of shrapnel
Scrapes the stomach of the sky
While wordless lyrics of battle
Showcase the wisdom language of blood.

Into the sunset, the soldier sings
A song with workaholic weaponry -
& The Body Bag Blues goes platinum
With book deals faxed to foxholes
And film options fedexed to frontlines.
See the press hyperventilate;
See the paparazzi in heat.
A mini-series in the making; sitcom soon come.
The soldier sings on.
